JNMC Women's and Children's Health Research Unit
The Women’s and Children’s Health Research Unit established in 2001, is a unique research centre of excellence at JNMC, Belagavi conducting academic clinical trials focused on women and children. The unit has been funded by National Institute of Child Helath and Human Development, USA Global Network initiative since the inception of the network in 2001. JNMC is one of the six among the ten sites to be re-funded as a “Global Network Site for Women’s and Children’s Health Research” consecutively for the Fifth Cycle of funding through 2030. The research unit is designated as “WHO Collaborating Center for Research in Maternal and Perinatal Health” since 2019; “ICMR Centre for Clinical Trials” in 2021 and “ICMR- Collaborating Centre of Excellence” in recognition for the unit’s contribution to Biomedical Research since 2023. In addition, the National Health and Medical Research Council, Govt. of Australia recognised the research unit as “Accelerating Research and Progress in Maternal & Newborn Health Centre for Research Excellence” (ARPAN CRE) since 2023. The Research Unit is the ‘ONLY CENTRE IN INDIA’ with Five Distinguished Recognition by ICMR-DHR (GoI), WHO, NICHD-USA and NHMRC-Australia.
The JNMC Research Unit and its multi-disciplinary research team has been conducting Community and Facility based research activities, completing 52 studies aimed at decreasing maternal and child mortality for past 23 years. The unit has collaborated with 25 International Universities and Research Institutes from USA, UK, Canada, South Africa, Australia, Uganda, Zambia and Argentina and 25 Medical & Research Institutes in India. The unit has received funding support from WHO, NICHD, other NIH agencies, BMGF, CIFF, AAP, Gynuity Health Projects, Thrasher Research Fund, Grand Challenges Canada, DBT-Govt.of India and the UK-MRC. The research grant received so far amounts to 24.52 million dollars and with a research output with 270+ Publications in High Impact Medical Journals inc. NEJM, LANCET, etc. The results of many such insightful research studies have had a profound impact at national and international levels in shaping public health policies.
Clinical research
The Site Management Office (SMO) at KAHER is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for conducting Regulated Clinical Trials, including Pharmacokinetic and Pharmacodynamic Studies across Phase II, III, and IV. Compliant with DCGI and ICH-GCP guidelines, it maintains dedicated drug storage areas with precise temperature controls and secure data entry zones. Similarly, KLES Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital and Medical Research Centre, with expertise spanning various therapeutic areas, ensures trials; integrity and regulatory compliance. Accredited by NABH and FERCAP, KAHER & Ethics Committee upholds global ethical standards, facilitating meticulous review practices in health-related research.
Public Health
In 2008, KLE Academy of Higher Education and Research (Deemed-to-be-University) established a Department of Public Health to train professionals in community health. The two-year post-graduate program, open to graduates from diverse fields, offers rigorous training in health planning, policy-making, and research. Through hands-on experience at Primary Health Centres and Urban Health Centres affiliated with the University, students engage in community-based research, national health programs, and epidemic investigations. Developed in collaboration with the School of Public Health, University of Michigan, Thomas Jafferson University and University of Omen, the program benefits from faculty expertise and provides students with practical insights into real-world health challenges.
Basic Science Research Laboratory
The Dr. Prabhakar Kore Basic Science Research Centres in Belagavi and Bangalore represent cutting-edge facilities dedicated to advancing medical treatment. These centers, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, house a multidisciplinary team of faculty and students conducting research in bio-pharmaceuticals, pharmaceutical analysis, medical microbiology, and natural products. Spanning 10,000 sq. ft., they host workshops and seminars, fostering knowledge exchange among participants from KLE University and beyond. Besides major VGST and KLE Academy-funded projects, the centers delve into research across Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Ayurveda, leading to numerous high- quality publications. Their steadfast commitment to excellence has rapidly established them as leaders in the field of research.
The Micronutrient Testing Laboratory
